One of the things we cat lovers know for sure is that our feline friends sleep almost all the time. That’s obvious, I know, but there are some fun facts about it that I bet you didn’t know. So, let’s discover them!

6 Curiosities About Cat Sleep

1.- Cats Sleep Most of Their Lives

This is definitely one of the most fascinating things about cats, and it makes you wonder... how do these little furballs manage to sleep so much? And of course, they usually do it during the day, so at night when we’re resting, they seem to be partying—jumping, running, playing, especially if they interact with other cats, whether they’re housemates or outside friends. I know nobody’s keeping track, but cats sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day, which is roughly two-thirds of their life. Can you believe it? Cats spend most of their lives sleeping!

2.- Older Cats Sleep More

Well, in this way, they’re like humans. As cats age, they tend to sleep even more throughout the day. This is completely normal and happens because their energy levels decrease with age, meaning they need more time to rest and fully recover.

3.- Kittens and Sleep

Kittens sleep even more than adult cats, often between 16 and 20 hours a day. If you’ve had kittens, you know that sleeping is what they do most. And there’s an important reason for this—this extra sleep helps them grow and develop. Their bodies need time, food, and rest to grow fully, just like babies of other species, including humans.

4.- Sleeping in Unusual Places

There’s no surprise here—our beloved cats sometimes love to sleep in strange or unusual spots, like boxes, closets, drawers, or on the back of the sofa. This comes from their instinct to seek out safe, high places where they can rest undisturbed and have a good view of their surroundings, just in case a predator approaches. Obviously, this behavior comes from thousands of years ago when they were wild hunters like tigers. But now, they just look adorable finding and sleeping in odd places.

5.- Sleeping in Twisted Positions

This is something I absolutely love about cats. They will always find the most comfortable way to sleep, even if they look twisted or uncomfortable to us. They’ll find a position where they’re completely at ease. Plus, when they sleep in such vulnerable positions, like exposing their belly, it shows they trust you completely. They’d never sleep that way if they didn’t feel safe.

Interestingly, at least in my experience, the cats that sleep in the weirdest or most twisted positions tend to be male. Female cats usually seem more elegant and delicate, though I’ve also seen them forget that sometimes and sleep in funny ways too.

6.- Sometimes They Sleep Curled Up in a Ball

If you’ve ever wondered why cats sleep curled up in a ball, the answer is simple: to conserve their body heat and protect their vital organs. This instinct goes way back to their wild ancestors, who, when exposed to the elements, needed to stay warm and protect themselves from potential threats while resting. Sleeping in a ball was a natural way to do this—their bodies retain heat, and their vital organs remain shielded.

In conclusion, cats are truly special and full of curiosities. I would never have guessed that they spend two-thirds of their lives asleep, but I do know that it’s their favorite activity—right after eating. And even when they’re asleep, they are absolutely beautiful and perfect.
