Discover the Secret Behind Their Incredible Flexibility

• Posted Sep 27 • 2024.

One of the most surprising facts about cats is that they have more bones than we humans do, which is especially striking given their much smaller size. While humans have 206 bones in our bodies, cats have approximately 230. Though this difference may not seem like much, it’s actually quite significant because it plays a key role in their anatomy and, of course, their extraordinary physical abilities.

The Flexibility of Cats

The 24 additional bones that felines have compared to us are primarily concentrated in their spine and their beautiful tails. Thanks to this, cats have a truly unique bone structure, which gives them their extraordinary flexibility—something we cat owners know very well when we see them slip into the smallest spaces, almost like liquid, or perform fantastic movements that seem impossible for other animals. It’s their spine, with more vertebrae than humans, that gives them this added elasticity. Amazing, right?

Why Do Cats Need This Flexibility?

The short answer is: to get into more mischief, right? But in reality, it’s an evolutionary adaptation that made them incredibly effective hunters, as we all know. By being able to move faster, bend, and jump with extraordinary precision, cats can hunt more easily, face off against other predators, and escape dangerous situations. At home, we see this when they twist into impossible positions while sleeping, or use their agility and speed to catch mice or insects, or even when they wake up and stretch in ways that leave us in awe—and maybe a little jealous!

The Tail’s Function: More Than Just Beautiful

A cat's tail has a precise function: to help maintain balance. Of course, it also helps us gauge their mood and sometimes gives us a friendly swat when they’re close by. But its primary role in balance is what allows them to walk confidently on high or narrow places. We can see this when they’re in a tree, on a fence, or on the edge of furniture—where their tail acts as a counterweight, helping them keep steady. Of course, there are exceptions—we’ve all seen those cats with 0% coordination when jumping or balancing, and they’re downright hilarious.

Small Bones and Agile Paws

Speaking of their beautiful, soft, furry paws, these are surprisingly strong and made up of numerous small bones that allow for rapid, incredibly precise movements. This becomes most obvious when we see them jump great distances with stunning accuracy or hunt a mouse or insect, moving without making a sound. They are truly extraordinary.

Implications for Feline Health and Life

Interestingly, the number of bones and the flexibility of cats also have implications for their health and life. It’s thanks to their remarkable agility and reflexes that the legend of cats having 9 lives exists. For example, their speed, agility, and flexibility help them avoid injuries during falls. We’ve all seen how cats can fall from high places and barely get hurt—where other animals would likely die or be seriously injured, cats walk away unscathed. Cats are known for their ability to fall from great heights without injury because they can twist their bodies mid-air to reduce the impact and land on their feet. As incredible as it sounds, this is due to a combination of flexibility, speed, strength, and their ability to balance with the help of their tails.

In conclusion, cats—or at least most of them—are extraordinary beings, gifted by God and nature with incredible skills, strength, and reflexes. They are perfect, natural-born predators, which is why it’s better to keep them indoors. They’re such efficient hunters that they’ll decimate their prey. But the one thing they hunt best—and on this, I’m sure you’ll agree—is our hearts. There’s no escaping that one!
