Cat Stories....
• Posted Sep 18 • 2024.
This is a beautiful story about a little cat who went from living on the streets to becoming a firefighter. Discover how he was adopted and the life he had, surrounded by the love of the firefighters in Mexico City. It's truly worth knowing this heartwarming tale.
Wicho was a stray cat, like many who sadly live that way in big cities. However, in 2022, he was adopted by the Fenix Station of the Mexico City Fire Department. He was in very poor condition when they found him, severely malnourished and with serious injuries, especially to one of his little eyes. But thanks to the love and dedication of these tough men, along with the help of veterinarians, Wicho made a full recovery. He was then officially assigned to the Ave Fénix Station in the Cuauhtémoc borough, given a special place, and of course, his very own firefighter uniform.
Wicho had several duties, including ensuring there were no pests, accompanying the firefighters as they inspected their trucks, and even riding along with them to emergencies. The firefighters saw him as one of their own, often saying his understanding was very clear and obvious. At this point, I’d like to remind everyone who owns a cat that it often seems like they fully understand us but simply choose to ignore us. Wicho, however, did listen, and that's why he was considered a true feline firefighter at Fenix Station.

Wicho actively participated in the daily routines of the firefighters, accompanying them from the morning and being present during the inspection of equipment and trucks, as well as in the moments leading up to emergency calls. His playful nature and constant companionship made him a very special member of the team, deeply appreciated by the firefighters who took full responsibility for this beloved feline.
Sadly, Wicho passed away in August 2023. We deeply regret the passing of our friend and companion 'Wicho.' We will always carry him in our hearts. This was the heartfelt message the firefighters shared on social media, causing great sadness among the firefighters and the people who followed his story, some of whom even brought him food. It may be a story with a sad ending, but consider how in his final year, Wicho finally experienced being loved and protected by humans and felt like part of a community, a family. His memory will, of course, live on at Fenix Station, where many fondly remember the cat who brought joy and companionship to the Heroic Fire Department of Mexico City.
Stories like this are not rare; there are always people who adopt and protect cats, though we wish there were more. That’s why it’s so important to always spay and neuter your cats, both males and females, to reduce these types of abandonment stories. In Wicho’s case, he was incredibly lucky to find his family, and even though it was only for a year, he got to experience what every cat deserves—love, care, protection, and companionship from his firefighter colleagues. Every cat deserves this, and Wicho found it, leaving this world knowing he was truly loved.
