If you're here, it's because you like cats. Maybe you don't love them yet, because you haven't had one, but trust me, you will. If you're like me, someone who loves them and has more than one at home, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The love we feel for cats is unique because they're different—beautiful, intriguing, mysterious, perfect! Stick around, and let's explore why people love cats so much, starting with me, of course, because in case you haven’t noticed, I absolutely love cats!
The previous list reflects my own points, but I know many of us will agree on most of them. I also know that for other people, the reasons may differ, or there could even be more reasons, like the following:
In the end, there are countless reasons to love cats, but the important thing is that we enjoy the company, affection, beauty, and perfection of our whiskered friends. We all know that while they believe themselves to be mighty tigers that nothing can stop, we know it’s better to take care of them and not waste any of their nine lives.
I'll start with my own story. I can't say that my love for cats is something I inherited directly from my parents. They prefer dogs, and don't get me wrong, I like dogs too—their loyalty and nobility are incredible—but I simply prefer cats. I like them so much more. Anyway, as I was saying, my love for cats didn't come from my parents but from an uncle of mine who passed away many years ago. He was a man who grew up in the countryside, where dogs weren't considered part of the family but rather working animals. But, as you might imagine, the true kings of that place were the cats. While the dogs were treated harshly as working animals on a farm, the cats received all the affection and pampering from the humans there.
Years later, my uncle became a teacher in a big city and met his future wife, my aunt Josephine, my mother's sister. The story is classic—they met, fell in love, and got married, creating a beautiful family. But, of course, besides children, my uncle wanted, as you might guess, cats—at least one. Years later, I was born, and eventually, I got to know and spend time with the cats on my uncle's farm. I remember a fat, cross-eyed, and absolutely gorgeous Siamese cat, who was lovingly called "Fat." Like all Siamese cats, he had a very special personality and didn't like to be petted by kids much. But years later, my aunt and uncle adopted a long-haired tortoiseshell cat, and she did let herself be touched! Her name was Chewbacca (because she was so furry), and I was simply enchanted. Her soft fur, her elegance, her beauty, her perfection, and her attitude that we all know, as if she were saying, "I know I'm beautiful and perfect, worship me!"
And so, I started asking for a cat at home, more and more insistently, but without success. Years later, my siblings and I finally got a kitten, and we named him Blonde. He was an orange cat, beautiful, big, strong, with a determined and very independent attitude. He was my first cat, and well, from there on, I was hooked. Now I'm a 43-year-old man, and I have three cats, whom I adore and take great care of.
I told that story to emphasize that not all of us who adore cats grew up with them. Some of us, the moment we got to know them, simply fell under their spell—captivated by their charm, grace, mystery, and beauty. They're special animals, we all know that. Anyway, here’s a short list of my personal reasons why I adore cats.
I believe we love cats so much because they’re the perfect combination of independence and emotional connection with us, all wrapped up in a small, soft, furry, and beautiful body, with unique and captivating personalities. They are beautiful and elegant creatures that can disappear for hours as if they don’t know or need us, only to suddenly seek us out to show us how much they care and need us. Plus, it’s true that their presence is calming, bringing peace and serenity to both us and our home.
I also think we love them simply because they’re so beautiful and perfect that petting them is a delightful experience, and it feels like an achievement since cats don’t let just anyone pet them—they only allow it for those they truly care about. Perhaps that’s part of it too—the fact that cats aren’t submissive, and if we manage to earn their affection, it means we’ve done something right and can consider ourselves worthy of receiving their love (it sounds crazy, I know, but think about it), and then we get to enjoy their company and everything that comes with it.
So, I believe our love for cats starts with their beauty, elegance, and perfection, but it grows even stronger as we get to know them, live with them, and fill our homes and lives with their intriguing and sometimes mysterious character and personality. But also with their affection, purring, fun, and their special loyalty. If there are truly special animals in this world, it’s them.
In conclusion, cats are special and unique beings. It’s often said that dogs are angels sent by God to Earth, and I usually agree with that idea. But that’s what makes cats different—they are so special that sometimes they seem like angels, but other times, I wonder who really sent them to Earth. Ha-ha-ha, I’m just kidding. By the way, guess what? My daughter, who’s now in college, has her own cat, so she can say she definitely inherited her love for cats directly from me. Yei!
