Why We Love Cats

• Posted Sep 6 • 2024.

If you're here, it's because you like cats. Maybe you don't love them yet, because you haven't had one, but trust me, you will. If you're like me, someone who loves them and has more than one at home, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The love we feel for cats is unique because they're different—beautiful, intriguing, mysterious, perfect! Stick around, and let's explore why people love cats so much, starting with me, of course, because in case you haven’t noticed, I absolutely love cats!

Why We Love Cats

My short list on why we love cats

  • Their Beauty: Cats are truly beautiful animals. It's hard (not impossible, I know) to find an ugly cat, something that's quite common in other animals. But most cats are really stunning in their features—their fur, their face, their eyes, and everything else. Let’s face it, they’re perfect.

  • Their Grace and Elegance: The way they walk, jump, or even just sit has elegance, grace, and poise. They aren’t clumsy; they even eat or sit with elegance. Their movements are smooth and graceful. You know what I mean—if a cat is curled up sleeping, it looks adorable, but if it suddenly stretches out its paw, it looks a thousand times more adorable and drives us crazy. Also Watching them jump great distances or quickly climb a tree is fascinating.

  • Their Personality: Like any animal or human, each cat has a unique personality, but they all share one trait: they’re little divas! I say this in the best way possible—they know they’re gorgeous and that they drive us wild, or at least it seems that way, right? On the other hand, I love how some can be funny, grumpy, mischievous, or more relaxed, yet they all know they’re perfect.

  • Their Independence: This ties into the previous point—I love that they’re independent and not always on top of you like a dog. They can disappear for hours inside the house, and everything’s fine. When they want love or attention, they’ll come find you, but you don’t need to be looking after them all day. That fascinates me.

  • Calm Companionship: When a cat wants to be with you, they’ll sit quietly by your side and give you that sense of peace and tranquility that only they can provide. Their soft fur, their purring, their nice smell, and their light weight make having them on your lap or just beside you so comforting and relaxing. As I write this, my senior cat Valentina is right beside me, lying down, calm, and quietly looking beautiful and relaxed, giving me that same feeling.

  • Cleanliness: Cats are very clean animals, and they don’t have unpleasant odors. What I love most is that they’re the ones most concerned about it! They bathe themselves, clean themselves, and go to their litter box on their own. Their independence and hygiene are incredible.

  • Affectionate: Despite what some people might say about cats not being affectionate, we all know that’s not true. Cats are very loving animals, and they have no problem showing it. The difference is that they only give affection to those who deserve it and when they want to. That’s why getting affection from a cat is so special.

  • No More Mice: When there’s a cat in the house, it’s hard for mice to get in, and if they do, it’s even harder for them to survive. Cats are natural hunters and will keep your house free of these pests without you even asking. They take care of their home.

  • Loyalty: Yes, you read that right—cats are loyal. But once again, in line with their personality and independence, they are loyal to those who deserve it. A dog, sadly, might stay with someone who treats them poorly. A cat would NEVER do that—treat them badly, and they’re gone, simple as that. That’s something I love about cats—there’s no messing around with them.

  • Their demands: Cats don’t require much of your time, and honestly, they don't need much effort—at least compared to a dog. But unlike a dog, when they want something, they don’t ask submissively. They ask with force, and many times, they demand it, almost as if we were their servants. A lot of people don’t understand why we like this, but it’s simply because it’s so funny and adorable that a little ball of fur thinks they’re actually in charge.

  • Their exceptions: Everything I’ve just said has exceptions. Cats look beautiful when they sit, but sometimes they sit awkwardly, and it looks funny. Or cats jump great distances with amazing precision, but sometimes they miscalculate and fall. Or a cat that asks for things in a gentle and affectionate way. Cats are great hunters, but sometimes they see a mouse and get scared. In short, there are always exceptions, and with animals as perfect as cats, these exceptions are just really amusing.

  • They’re almost perfect: I think it’s obvious that I love cats. I find them practically perfect, except for one thing—unfortunately, they generally don’t live as long as we do.

They are perfect!

Other reasons

The previous list reflects my own points, but I know many of us will agree on most of them. I also know that for other people, the reasons may differ, or there could even be more reasons, like the following:

  • Soothing Purring: Many people find the sound of a cat's purring calming, helping them reduce stress and anxiety.

  • Companionship: Many people also see their cats as their closest companions, and cats return that affection.

  • Low Maintenance: A cat doesn’t need much space or to be taken outside, making them perfect for many people.

  • Intriguing Behavior: Many people love wondering what a cat is thinking, with their gestures and attitudes that are sometimes hard to read.

In the end, there are countless reasons to love cats, but the important thing is that we enjoy the company, affection, beauty, and perfection of our whiskered friends. We all know that while they believe themselves to be mighty tigers that nothing can stop, we know it’s better to take care of them and not waste any of their nine lives.

Companionship

Companionship

why do I love cats so much? My own story

I'll start with my own story. I can't say that my love for cats is something I inherited directly from my parents. They prefer dogs, and don't get me wrong, I like dogs too—their loyalty and nobility are incredible—but I simply prefer cats. I like them so much more. Anyway, as I was saying, my love for cats didn't come from my parents but from an uncle of mine who passed away many years ago. He was a man who grew up in the countryside, where dogs weren't considered part of the family but rather working animals. But, as you might imagine, the true kings of that place were the cats. While the dogs were treated harshly as working animals on a farm, the cats received all the affection and pampering from the humans there.

Years later, my uncle became a teacher in a big city and met his future wife, my aunt Josephine, my mother's sister. The story is classic—they met, fell in love, and got married, creating a beautiful family. But, of course, besides children, my uncle wanted, as you might guess, cats—at least one. Years later, I was born, and eventually, I got to know and spend time with the cats on my uncle's farm. I remember a fat, cross-eyed, and absolutely gorgeous Siamese cat, who was lovingly called "Fat." Like all Siamese cats, he had a very special personality and didn't like to be petted by kids much. But years later, my aunt and uncle adopted a long-haired tortoiseshell cat, and she did let herself be touched! Her name was Chewbacca (because she was so furry), and I was simply enchanted. Her soft fur, her elegance, her beauty, her perfection, and her attitude that we all know, as if she were saying, "I know I'm beautiful and perfect, worship me!"

And so, I started asking for a cat at home, more and more insistently, but without success. Years later, my siblings and I finally got a kitten, and we named him Blonde. He was an orange cat, beautiful, big, strong, with a determined and very independent attitude. He was my first cat, and well, from there on, I was hooked. Now I'm a 43-year-old man, and I have three cats, whom I adore and take great care of.

I told that story to emphasize that not all of us who adore cats grew up with them. Some of us, the moment we got to know them, simply fell under their spell—captivated by their charm, grace, mystery, and beauty. They're special animals, we all know that. Anyway, here’s a short list of my personal reasons why I adore cats.

So, why do we love cats?

I believe we love cats so much because they’re the perfect combination of independence and emotional connection with us, all wrapped up in a small, soft, furry, and beautiful body, with unique and captivating personalities. They are beautiful and elegant creatures that can disappear for hours as if they don’t know or need us, only to suddenly seek us out to show us how much they care and need us. Plus, it’s true that their presence is calming, bringing peace and serenity to both us and our home.

I also think we love them simply because they’re so beautiful and perfect that petting them is a delightful experience, and it feels like an achievement since cats don’t let just anyone pet them—they only allow it for those they truly care about. Perhaps that’s part of it too—the fact that cats aren’t submissive, and if we manage to earn their affection, it means we’ve done something right and can consider ourselves worthy of receiving their love (it sounds crazy, I know, but think about it), and then we get to enjoy their company and everything that comes with it.

So, I believe our love for cats starts with their beauty, elegance, and perfection, but it grows even stronger as we get to know them, live with them, and fill our homes and lives with their intriguing and sometimes mysterious character and personality. But also with their affection, purring, fun, and their special loyalty. If there are truly special animals in this world, it’s them.

In conclusion, cats are special and unique beings. It’s often said that dogs are angels sent by God to Earth, and I usually agree with that idea. But that’s what makes cats different—they are so special that sometimes they seem like angels, but other times, I wonder who really sent them to Earth. Ha-ha-ha, I’m just kidding. By the way, guess what? My daughter, who’s now in college, has her own cat, so she can say she definitely inherited her love for cats directly from me. Yei!
